How To Celebrate Your Pet’s Birthday

Do you celebrate your pet’s birthday or buy Christmas presents for your four legged family member?  Many dog or cat owners like to celebrate their pet’s special day the day with special treats or even gifts.  You may not know your dog’s or cat’s actual birthday, but you likely have a record of the day he/she came into your home.  Treats and toys are always appropriate for your pet’s birthday, and are definitely recommended, but there are plenty of other options.

Toys  Pets are able to see colour but it is limited.

“Although it is commonly believed that dogs and cats see only in black and white, recent evidence suggests that animals may have some degree of useful colour vision. The perception of colour is determined by the presence of cone photoreceptors within the retina. These cone cells function in bright light conditions and comprise approximately 20% of the photoreceptors in the central retina of the dog, where as a human’s central retina is 100% cones. Behavioural tests in dogs suggest that they can distinguish yellow and blue colours but often confuse green and red.”

So when buying a pet toy think BLUE & YELLOW

Pool Fun  Does your dog’s birthday fall in summer? Why not get Fido a little wading pool of his own?

Doghouse (Cathouse)  What about a new accessory for your home such as a new plush bed for your canine friend to curl up and rest on or a new climbing post or window perch for the feline friend of the house.

An Adventure  Why not take Fido to a doggy café? Dog-friendly bistros and cafes are popping up all over the place.   Check out this article on these dog friendly patios in Vancouver. http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2014/05/10-great-vancouver-dog-friendly-patios/

Join a Class   What about signing your dog up for agility, dock diving or training class for movies.

Puzzle Toys   Have you ever looked into puzzle toys for your pet?  These are great ways to keep your pet busy and entertained.

Birthday Party If you have an outgoing pet who loves company consider inviting some of your animal-loving friends over for a barbeque, and stock up on plenty of treats. Have everyone give Fido small tidbits, and take turns playing with your pooch and giving out ear scratches and belly rubs.  Remember to not give treats that are fatty as they can cause pancreatitis – we do not want to ruin a good party with a sick puppy.
